Description
Combutol 800 mg is indicated for treating infections caused by M. tuberculosis. It should only be used as part of a combination treatment regimen for M.tuberculosis. It should not be used as the sole antituberculosis agent but in conjunction with at least one other antituberculosis drug. In patients, who have not received antituberculosis therapy, which is the initial treatment, the most frequently used regimens are given below:
— Ethambutol with Isoniazid
— Ethambutol with isoniazid with streptomycin
Mycobacterial resistance to other drugs used in initial therapy is frequent in patients who have received previous antituberculosis therapy.
Antituberculosis medications used with ethambutol have included ethionamide, cycloserine, viomycin, pyrazinamide and other drugs.
Tuberculosis or TB is an infectious disease mainly affecting the lungs and other body parts. TB can be treated with a course of medicines that need to be taken for six months to treat TB, and ethambutol is one of the therapies prescribed during the initial two months of the treatment. Combutol will be prescribed for you by your doctor, who specializes in treating TB. You must take it regularly, exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Product Description
Some medicines are unsuitable for people with certain conditions, and sometimes a medicine can only be used if extra care is taken. For these reasons, before you begin taking this ethambutol formulation, if you are/have:
— Pregnant or breastfeeding
— Eyesight problem
— Kidney issues
— Taking any other medicines. These include prescription and non-prescription drugs.
Combutol 800 is contraindicated in patients who are known to be hypersensitive to any of its ingredients. It is also contraindicated in patients with known optic neuritis unless doctors determine it may be used. The medicine is contraindicated in patients who cannot appreciate and report visual side effects or changes in vision, especially in young children and unconscious patients.
The study of combining Combutol 800 with products containing antacids in patients with tuberculosis showed a reduction in mean serum concentrations and urinary excretion of Combutol, suggesting that these antacid products may reduce the oral absorption of ethambutol.
It is suggested to avoid concurrent administration of Combutol with aluminium hydroxide-containing antacids for at least four hours following Combutol administration.
Side Effects
Side effects of Combutol 800 mg include skin rash, confusion, skin rash, abdominal pain, fever, pain and swelling or joint, chills, fever, burning or tingling sensation of hand and feet, loss of vision, or blurred vision.
How to Use
Before you start the treatment, read the prescription. This will give you more information about Combutol and provide detailed instructions on drug use. Ethambutol formulation will be prescribed for you in one of two ways; you will be asked to take one dose or one dose thrice a week. Your doctor will tell you the right way to take this medicine that will best suit you. If you are instructed to take one dose thrice daily a week, you will be supervised while you receive the doses. This is referred to as directly observed therapy.
Dose adjustment is needed in renal insufficiency. Combutol is available in the form of a tablet for oral administration.
