Description
Cystopen 100 mg is a prescription for relieving bladder pain or discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis. It is unknown how exactly the medicine works, but it is not a pain medication like aspirin or acetaminophen and must be used continuously for relief as prescribed. It contains the active substance pentosan polysulfate sodium, which passes into the urine and attaches to the lining of the bladder, helping to form a protective layer. Cystopen is also used in adults to treat bladder pain syndrome characterized by many tiny bleeds or distinctive lesions on the bladder wall, moderate to severe pain, and a frequent urge to urinate.
Product Description
— Do not take Cystopen if you are allergic to pentosan polysulfate sodium or any of the other ingredients of this medicine. Avoid taking medicine if you are bleeding (other than menstrual bleeding).
— Cystopen is a weak blood thinner that may increase bleeding.
— Patients undergoing surgery should talk with their doctor about when to discontinue treatment before surgery. Cystopen should be used during pregnancy only if required.
— Pentosan polysulfate sodium is not recommended in children under 18 years of age as safety and effectiveness have not been established in this group.
— Let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicine, particularly medicines that prevent blood clotting or painkillers that reduce blood clotting.
— Cystopen is not recommended in children under 18 years of age.
Let your doctor know if you have the following:
— Taking anticoagulant medication such as warfarin sodium, high doses of aspirin heparin, or anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.
— Undergoing surgery
— Blood clotting disorder or increased bleeding risks, such as using a medicine that inhibits blood clotting
— Had a reduced number of blood platelets caused by the medicine heparin
— Liver diseases
— If you are pregnant
Side Effects
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, hair loss, back pain, infections, flu, weakness, pelvic pain, rectal bleeding, rash, headache, upset stomach, bruising, dizziness, and abnormal liver function tests. Talk to your doctor if these side effects persist or become bothersome or if you notice blood in your stools. If you get any side effects, please talk to your doctor.
How to Use
You should take one capsule of Cystopen by mouth thrice daily, with water at least an hour before meals or two hours after meals. Your doctor will assess your response to Cystopen every six months. Take the capsule with a glass full of water without opening the capsule.
