Description
Syncapone (12.5+50+200 mg) contains three active substances, Levodopa, carbidopa, and Entacapone, in one film-coated tablet. It is a prescription treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s is a neurological disorder that causes slow movement, shaking and muscle stiffness. It is believed to cause due to low dopamine levels in the brain. Levodopa increases the amount of dopamine and hence reduces the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Carbidopa and Entacapone help to improve the antiparkinsonian effects of Levodopa.
In patients who have Parkinson’s disease, the brain cells that produce dopamine (a chemical substance used to transmit signals between nerve cells that help to control muscle movement) begin to die, and dopamine level in the brain decreases. The patients then lose their ability to control movement and coordination. All three ingredients-Levodopa, carbidopa and Entacapone, restore the dopamine levels that help to control movements in such patients. All three ingredients in the same tablet can lower the number of tablets the patients have to take and help them adhere to the treatment regimen.
Product Description
Do not take Syncapone if you have previous allergies to any of the ingredients of this medicine, have a tumour of the adrenal gland, narrow-angle glaucoma, neuroleptic syndrome, non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis (a rare muscle condition) and severe liver disease.
Talk to your doctor before taking Syncapone if you have or have ever had heart disease (heart attack or stroke), respiratory conditions (asthma), a liver problem, Stomach ulcers, kidney or hormone-related disease, any form of mental disorder, chronic wide-angle glaucoma, or diarrhoea that could be a sign of inflammation of the colon.
Consult your doctor if you are taking medicines to treat psychosis or if that may cause low blood pressure when rising from a bed or a chair. One should be aware that the triple combination medicine may worsen these reactions.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of Syncapone are dyskinesia (uncontrollable movements), nausea, diarrhoea, muscle pain and harmless urine discolouration. Serious side effects include bleeding in the gut and angioedema (swelling under the skin of the face and limbs).
For the complete list of side effects, please talk to your doctor. The triple combination medicine must not be used along with other medicines that belong to the group of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (a type of depressant).
How to Use
Your doctor will advise you on how many tablets of Syncapone to take daily. Do not break the pill into smaller pieces. You should not take only one pill each time. Depending on how you respond to treatment, you may be advised to take a higher or lower dose. Leave at least an hour between Entacapone and any other medicine your doctor advises. Do not stop the treatment unless advised by your health care provider. In such a case, you may be advised to adjust your other antiparkinson’s drugs, especially Levodopa, to achieve sufficient control over your symptoms. If you suddenly stop taking Syncapone or any other antiparkinson drug, you may be more likely to experience unwanted side effects.
